If you’ve ever dreamed of pressing pause on your everyday life to focus entirely on your art — surrounded by inspiration, time, and perhaps a new landscape — then an artist residency might be calling your name. But are they really worth it? Should you apply? Here’s what I’ve learned from researching, applying to, and experiencing artist residencies — the benefits, the real-life challenges, and how to know if it’s the right move for you.
An artist residency is a dedicated time and space for you to create, reflect, experiment, or develop a body of work. Some residencies are solo, others are community-based. Some last a weekend, others run for months. No errands, no dishes, no distractions. Just you and your work. It’s like stepping into a creative bubble — one that can lead to serious breakthroughs.
Many residencies involve other artists, which means conversations, collaborations, and friendships you wouldn’t find elsewhere. You leave with more than just artwork — you leave with perspective.
Residencies aren't just for established artists. Many welcome emerging or self-taught artists — especially if you can clearly communicate your passion and goals. Are You Open to New Challenges? Residencies can be lonely, vulnerable, or push you outside your comfort zone. That’s part of the growth — but be honest with yourself about what kind of support you’ll need.
