How I Handle Commission Requests (And When I Say No)

Commissions can be a beautiful collaboration between artist and collector. But they can also be draining, creatively limiting, or just not the right fit. Whether you’re an artist or someone thinking of commissioning me, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I handle these requests (and why I sometimes say no). First, I Ask: Is This the Right Fit? Before I say yes, I ask a few important questions like "Does this person want something in my existing style?" or " Are they familiar with my past work?

If it feels like they want something completely outside my creative voice, I may not be the right artist for the job — and that’s okay. When I do accept a commission, I make sure the process is smooth and professional and I Set Creative Boundaries. Commissions are a collaboration — but I make sure they don’t compromise my voice as an artist.

Sometimes I have to turn down a commission, and here’s why I might. The request doesn't align with my style or values, the timeline is unrealistic or conflicts with existing work or the project doesn't light a creative spark Saying no is never personal — it’s about protecting the energy I bring to each piece and ensuring every client gets my best work, not my burnout.

I Recommend Alternatives When Possible. If I say no, I try to recommend another artist who would be a good fit, offer available originals or prints in a similar theme or invite the person to join my mailing list for future commission openings. That way, the door stays open — and no one feels rejected.
