In oil painting, color often steals the spotlight. It’s emotional, and immediately expressive. Yet behind every powerful painting lies a quieter, more fundamental force: value. If your paintings ever feel flat, confusing, or less convincing than you imagined, the issue is rarely color. More often, it’s a values problem.
Learning to master values before diving into color can dramatically transform your work and accelerate your growth as a painter. Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color, independent of its hue. Strip a painting of color entirely, and what remains is a structure of light and shadow. That structure is the backbone of the image.
Think of value as the architectural framework of a painting. Color is the décor—it enhances, personalizes, and enriches—but without a strong structure, even the most beautiful colors collapse. Why does values Matter More Than Color? The human eye reads value before it reads color. A painting with accurate values will still work even if the colors are unconventional. A painting with weak values will fail, no matter how “correct” the colors are. Color becomes a distraction when values aren’t already established.
Even in a color painting, begin by blocking in values thinly. Add rich color after the value relationships are established. Some artists worry that focusing on values makes painting rigid or technical. Values give you permission to take creative risks—because the painting can support them.
If you commit to understanding values deeply, you’ll notice something remarkable: your paintings will start to hold together—even before they’re finished. That’s when oil painting truly becomes expressive rather than frustrating.
