How I Price Commission Work – A Breakdown

Pricing commissioned artwork can feel tricky—balancing your time, materials, skill, and the client’s expectations. Here’s a breakdown of how I price my commissioned pieces:

The foundation of my pricing starts with the painting’s size and complexity. Larger pieces take more time and materials, so naturally, they cost more. Similarly, a detailed, intricate work commands a higher price than a quick sketch or a simple study. I factor in the cost of quality paints, brushes, canvases, and other materials. Using premium supplies ensures a durable, vibrant final piece—and that cost is reflected in the price.

Every piece requires dedicated time—from initial sketches to final varnishing. I estimate the total hours needed and assign an hourly rate that values my expertise and experience. Custom requests—such as adding extra figures, complex backgrounds, or changes after approval—may require additional work. I include a clause for revisions, often pricing the first round into the base, with extra rounds billed separately.

If the client wants to use the artwork commercially (e.g., for branding, merchandise), that’s a separate license fee. For personal use only, the price covers the physical artwork and personal display rights. I usually request a non-refundable deposit upfront (often 30–50%) before starting. This secures the project and covers initial costs. The remaining balance is due upon completion and approval.

If you’re an artist wondering how to set your prices or a collector curious about the costs, I hope this sheds some light.
